gun metal Eng.
A type of bronze which, depends on the standard specifications, containing 88-90% copper, 8-10% tin and 2-4% zinc. In the past, it is used to cast cannons, which is now superseded by steel. It is still used in making bearings. The alloy is highly resistant to wear and corrosion.

gunpowder Chem.
An explosive consisting of a mixture of potassium nitrate (saltpetre), charcoal and sulfur. The proportion can be 75%, 15% and 10% respectively. Thought to be first invented by Chinese in eighth century AD for use in warfare although there is stronger evidence of its use in 12th century. The reaction is highly exorthermic and rapid, producing large volume of gases such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide in a very short period of time (explosion). Until 19th century it was used in artillery and explosive. Nowadays, it is used in fireworks.
