hominidae Biol.
A family of modern humans and extinct immediate ancestors of man. More recently, this also includes chimpanzees, gorrillas and orangutans. Some example species that are believed to be ancestral to man such as A. robustus, H. erectus, H. habilis etc.
These species are known only from fossil bones and teeth.
hormone Biochem.
A chemical substance that is produced in a small quantity and secreted by an endocrine gland or a specialized nerve cell and carried in the circulation to another distant organ. Different hormones will have specific effects on organ cells that regulates the growth
or other specific tissue functions. For example, the hormone insulin control the rates and ways of glucose consumption by the body.
