kerogen Geol.
A solid mixture of organic matter including algea and woody plant material contained in the sedimentary rock. When heated to around 150șC in the Earth's crust, the hydrocarbon components or fossil fuel may release. However, if rocks containing rich amount of kerogen have not been heated to a sufficient temperature the hydrocarbon may be retained in kerogen and form oil shale deposits.
