kimberlite Min.
A rare igneous rock that often contains diamonds. It normally occurs as narrow pipe intrusions (kimberlite pipe) through continental crust, that raised diamonds from the Earth's mantle. When near to the ground, the pipe can be loose and
fragmented, but deeper down it is solid and hard. It consists of olivine and phlogopite mica, usually with other alteration minerals such as serpentine.
It is mainly found in Kimberley, of which the name is derived, at South Africa and also in Yakutia area in Siberia and Angola.
