Kuiper Belt Objects Astron.
Rocky and icy asteroids and comets that may number in millions and exist over a vast area of space beyond the orbit of Neptune and extend possibly to
a distance of 400-500 AU from the Sun. There may be more than 35000 of them greater than 100 km in diameter. Also abbreviated as KBOs. Examples of KBOs
are Varuna and Quaoar. The planet Pluto is referred to some astronomers as a very large KBO. The term 'Kuiper' is derived from an American astronomer called
Gerard Kuiper.
