labile Chem.
Generally it means open to change, but in chemistry it describes a chemical compound where certain atoms or groups of atoms can be easily replaced by other atoms or groups. It is usually apply to complex compounds in which the coordination ligands can be easily replaced by other ligands in an equilibrium reaction.

lamp black Chem.
A powdered, amorphous form of carbon, used as ink, black pigment and filler. It is made by burning organic compounds (such as crude oil) in insufficient of oxygen. Lamp black is also known by other names such as carbon black, black soot, channel black, etc.

LAN Comp.
Abbreviation for Local Area Network, it is a communication system where a group of computers connected within an area. This can either consist of two computers connected via some kind of network cable or hundreds of computers located over several floors in a building.

lattice energy Chem.
Energy released when one mole of the solid ionic compound is formed from its constituent gaseous ions:

An alternative definition, which is the reverse of the above equation is the energy require to completely separate the constituent ions of a crystal from each other to an infinite distance.

lattice QCD Phys.
A computational technique to study quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The integral equations of QCD are very difficult to solve. However, Ken Wilson of Cornell University in 1974 introduced a numerical technique to solve the equations by representing space-time as a 4D lattice and express the QCD equations in terms of the quantum fields at the individual discrete points (lattice sites) with nothing in between the points.

Hundreds of different configuration 'snapshots' of the QCD vacuum that contain the gluon fields with the highest probability of appearing are generated. An average physical quantity such as mass of a hadron can then be calculated by averaging over these configurations.
