oleum Chem.
A commercial name for fuming sulfuric acid, formed by dissolving sulfur trioxide (SO3) in sulfuric acid (H2SO4). It is graded according to
percentage weight of dissolved sulfur trioxide. For example, oleum 24% contain 24% of free SO3 in 100% H2SO4. It has a chemical symbol H2SO4.xSO3 and is used
in the production of sulfonamides, fatty alcohol sulfates and amidosulfonic acids.
oncogene Biol.
A gene that is capable of causing the transformation of normal cells into cancer cells, by producing abnormal protein. This results in uncontrol cell division leading to the formation of cancerous tumors.
onium ion Chem.
An ion formed by adding a proton to a neutral molecular group. For example, in dissociation of acids, the addition of proton, (H+), to neutral water molecules to give
hydroxonium ion, H3O+. Other examples of onium ions are ammonium (H4N+), phosphonium (H4P+) and sulfonium (H3S+).
