Wurtz reaction Chem.
An organic chemical reaction to prepare alkanes by reacting a haloalkane with sodium:

2R-X + 2Na → 2NaX + R-R

Where R-X is the haloalkane and R is the alkyl group. The haloalkane and sodium is refluxed in dry ether. The reaction is named after the French chemist Charles-Adolphe Wurtz (1817-1884). It is known as a coupling reaction of two hydrocarbon group via a new C-C bond.
