zone refining Chem.
Purification method to produce ultra pure sample (impurity can be as low as the order of parts per billion), for use in semiconductors and other electronic components. A sample bar, such as silicon, is circled by a heating filament that melts very thin wafer of the material. The hot filament is moved slowly from one end of the sample bar to the other, while impurities are collected in the molten region surrounded by the filament and the sample solidifies behind it is very pure.

When the filament reaches the end it is switched off and brought back to the beginning and the whole process is repeated for several times. After that, the impurities that have collected at the end of the sample is cut off.

zoonosis Med.
A disease of animals or insect species that can infect humans. The natural reservoir of the disease is always a non-human animal.
