zwitterion Chem.
A chemical ion that carries both positive and negative charges. The opposite charges are usually situated far from each other within the molecule. For example, the amino acid, glycine with a chemical formula of H3N+ - CH2 - COO- where the positive charge is concentrated at the nitrogen atom, while the negative charge is located at the oxygen carboxylate group.
